IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Curriculum for ID Fellows

Now broadly available, IDSA developed its first ever comprehensive CORE Antimicrobial Stewardship Curriculum. The curriculum is designed to provide ID fellows with a foundation in antimicrobial stewardship, regardless of their ultimate career plans, as well as ensure that we are training future leaders in the field.

While the curriculum was designed for ID fellows, any healthcare professional or “steward - in - training” desiring education and training in AS will find the materials beneficial.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is organized into 4 main sections:

  • An introduction to AS,
  • Stewardship in Everyday Practice,
  • Educating and Coaching on AS, and
  • ASP Logistics.

Upon completion of the curriculum, stewards in training will be able to:

1. Explain the importance of antimicrobial stewardship
2. Model antimicrobial stewardship best practices
3. Structure a conversation to effect change in the antibiotic prescribing patterns of other providers
4. Describe elements of an effective antimicrobial stewardship program
5. Discuss antimicrobial stewardship as a potential career pathway

Why It's Different

The CORE curriculum is unique in several ways:

  • It is designed to be integrated longitudinally into an existing ID fellowship training program. Elements of the curriculum can be used separately and at various points in training so programs can tailor the curriculum to fit their needs
  • It is intended to be an interactive experience, fellows interact with the materials and also capitalize on existing resources at their home institution, including faculty & the Antimicrobial Stewardship team.
  • It is adaptable. The content of each section can be delivered in more than one way. For each section there is an eLearning option as well as face-to-face methods for interactive learning between faculty and fellows. These include case-based small group activities, simulations, interactive videos, presentations, assessments, and other tools that are designed to be used in the clinical setting.
